Every thousandth & every cent

Customization for cash dispensers & cash register systems.

LH and WM|MMA in use at Diebold Nixdorf.

As is well known, the fun stops when it comes to money. It doesn't matter whether you buy it or have to pay. Everything down to the hundredth has to be correct. Diebold Nixdorf, as a manufacturer of ATMs and cash register systems, has to take it much more precisely — here is the thousandth of the measure. And WENZEL first choice.

Diebold Nixdorf is one of the world's leading providers of IT solutions for banks and retailers. The company offers hardware, software, consulting services and services from a single source. Diebold Nixdorf is the market leader in Germany when it comes to ATMs and cash register systems. The banking offering comprises a complete range of automation and self-service systems, such as ATMs, information and transaction terminals or receipt printers.

For retailers, Diebold Nixdorf offers cash register systems, so-called self-checkout systems. As well as information systems and solutions for branch automation, such as electronic shelf labeling systems. Diebold Nixdorf is active worldwide, and the largest development and production location is Paderborn. Tens of thousands of ATMs and self-checkout systems come out of the plant in East Westphalia every year.

The ultra-modern production facility has its own sheet metal production, surface technology, component production with final assembly and extensive testing capacities. Internal resources are expanded by an extensive network of specialized suppliers. On this basis, complete cash register and cash dispensing systems are built in Paderborn, from individual parts to final assembly.

Gatekeeper for internal and external quality

Practically every component of the systems — whether in-house or externally — is served by measurement technology in Paderborn. This is not just for testing during series and production. The main task is initial sample testing for qualification, the “go” or “no” for parts suppliers and tool approval for internal production. Incoming goods inspection thus bears central gatekeeper responsibility at the access gate to production.

If the greatest care was not taken to separate the wheat from the chaff quickly and early, this would have far-reaching consequences in all subsequent process steps. If you realize that a complex money issuance or cash register system often consists of several thousand parts, you can sense the challenge that needs to be overcome. The challenge is not only the rapid testing of many similar workpieces, but also the variety of parts. And as a result, the large number of measurement programs required.

Quality rather than quantity is then the equally simple and sophisticated motto. But this is still under continuous time pressure. This is because manufacturing requires the rapid approval of supplier parts and in-house production, as it operates just in time up to a certain degree. The variety of test volumes is indeed remarkable. It ranges from a simply shaped washer measuring just a few millimeters to a complete housing the size of a household refrigerator with numerous measurement points. Nevertheless, the measurement room must not become a bottleneck in the overall process.

However, it was precisely this case that threatened the obsolescence of the measuring machines used to date and for a good two decades in 2014. On the one hand, their manufacturer discontinued the hardware service for the devices in question. On the other hand, the user software no longer met Diebold Nixdorf's requirements, such as measuring against 3D CAD data models. In their search for a more motivated and technically convincing alternative, the quality managers at Diebold Nixdorf focused on other positive business relationships in the measurement sector.

They came in the form of Wenzel sales partner Klostermann from Remscheid, who had already been entrusted with measurement services from Paderborn for years. Klostermann Ingenieurbüro und Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH has been involved in the various areas of coordinate measurement technology for more than four decades: distribution of 3D measuring machines, scanning systems, clamping and fixture systems, contract measurement technology, service for measuring machines and an extensive range of training courses. “With this profile — in particular the sale of WENZEL measuring machines — we obviously met Diebold Nixdorf's expectations for a future-oriented realignment at the Paderborn plant,” says managing director Christian Klostermann.

Large-portal measuring device combines coordinate & gearing measurement technology

Cooperation with those responsible for Paderborn came up with a coherent overall concept for the new equipment, initially with two WENZEL LH 87 3D coordinate measuring machines. In addition, the WM | Quartis from WENZEL measurement software installed by Klostermann opened up a whole new world of possibilities. For example, a speed dial board to trigger stored measurement programs allows even less experienced users to carry out the test.

This means that virtually all employees in Diebold Nixdorf's incoming goods and measurement room can now work with the systems regardless of their metrological qualification level. With several hundred measurement programs stored, this is a real blessing and a huge boost in productivity.

And the new software in Paderborn no longer “only” runs on the two WENZEL LH 87, which were purchased in 2014. Meanwhile, another 3D CMM — a Wenzel LH 108 — and a measuring arm, the WENZEL WM | MMA series, complete the quality assurance equipment. With the LH 108 and its wide measurement range, you can now test even the largest components used in-house. While the WENZEL measuring arm is used for complete systems that are too expansive and too heavy even for the LH 108 — such as fully assembled cash dispensers including a safe unit.
