Investing in the future

WENZEL modernizes manufacturing technology

The Waldrich Coburg surface grinding machine has been a central part of our production since 1986. With a grinding length of 6.0 meters, a grinding width of 2.2 meters and a height of 1.70 meters, it has worked around 150,000 operating hours over the years, processing around 35,000 components with the highest precision. In order to meet increasing requirements and to continue to ensure reliable and efficient processing, we have carried out a comprehensive modernization of the machine.

Scope of the general overhaul

The modernization of the surface grinding machine was carried out in two stages.

In the first stage, which was completed in October 2024, the machine underwent a major mechanical and electrical overhaul. In addition to a new control cabinet with complete cabling, the grinding spindle, including the motor and the gearing, was overhauled. All drive motors were replaced or redesigned, and the control system including the control panel was renewed. In addition, all standards were replaced, the machine was thoroughly cleaned and the design was adapted. In addition, the machine functions were expanded and automated lubrication was integrated.

In the second stage, which was completed on January 28, 2025, the table running surfaces will be overhauled, the Hirth gearing and the needle bands will be replaced, and the machine and table will be precisely aligned. A particular focus was on replacing the Teflon sliding linings followed by rescheduling the grinding table and the complete revision of the machine, head and table geometry.

Technical advantages and future applications
“Thanks to the modernization, the grinding machine is not only at the cutting edge of technology, but also offers maximum safety for our personnel. Furthermore, we will continue to ensure maximum machine availability in the future, with minimized maintenance and care costs. Waldrich is one of our most important processing machines and part of our granite processing process chain. The granite used in our measuring machines guarantees our highly accurate, reliable and extremely durable measuring devices. The Waldrich modernization measure was a very important element in ensuring this core competence in our production in the future,” explains managing director Karl Nagel.

Optimized control and improved machine geometry enable even more precise processing of granite, cast iron and steel components. In addition to processing in-house components, the machine is also used for contract services.

Time-lapse video of modernization
Together with our retrofit partner, Allmendinger Elektromechanik KG, we have documented the entire basic overhaul process in a time-lapse video, which clearly shows the most important steps and progress. With this investment, we ensure that our production continues to meet the highest quality and precision standards in the future.
